Innovative Technologies For A More Sustainable Future
AmplifiedAg is committed to creating farms that consume less resources, produce less waste, and grow more food for the world.
We are committed to sharing our progress as we develop our sustainable business strategy
The AmplifiedAg Sustainability Impact Update is the company’s first operations and impact evaluation that includes scope 1 and 2 emissions, resource consumption, waste reduction, and other social and environmental impacts, as well as AmplifiedAg’s future goals and commitments.
Water
A GLOBAL PROBLEM
Population growth and climate change are depleting freshwater supplies around the globe. In as little as 50 years, many regions in the US will see their water supplies reduced by more than a third. Conventional agriculture accounts for about 75% of annual water consumption and often leaches chemicals from pesticides and fertilizers into the existing groundwater supply.
OUR APPROACH
Using a closed-loop irrigation system, our hydroponic farms use up to 95% less water than conventional agriculture. Our team is working on innovative water conservation strategies in order to consume less and protect the world’s most valuable resource.
Food Waste
A GLOBAL PROBLEM
Nearly one-third of food grown in the United States is lost or wasted. When food sits in landfills it emits methane, a greenhouse gas 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide, directly impacting climate change.
OUR APPROACH
As a USDA Food Loss and Waste 2030 champion, we pledge to reduce all organic waste in our operations 50% by 2025, with the ultimate goal to eliminate it entirely. Through harvest optimization, donations, and composting, we strive to responsibly dispose of all food waste and avoid landfills, reducing our waste-related emissions.
Food Safety
A GLOBAL PROBLEM
OUR APPROACH
We are dedicated to growing the safest, highest quality food. Our farms are designed to achieve the highest global food safety standards. Lettuce grown in our enclosed, hydroponic farms is protected from harmful contaminants and pests. AmplifiedAg’s Vertical Roots farms hold USDA Harmonized GAP+ and FDA PrimusGFS certifications.
Emissions & Energy
A GLOBAL PROBLEM
10% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States come from agriculture. And 13% come from businesses and residences. Agricultural emissions come from many sources including, land use changes, farm machinery, and livestock.
OUR APPROACH
Although vertical farming requires more energy consumption to maintain the controlled environment, we are constantly improving the efficiency of our farms and exploring alternative energy sources to use less energy and preserve resources. All of our sustainability initiatives have the ultimate goal of reducing our own emissions, and educating the greater public on environmentally conscious practices.
Arable Land
A GLOBAL PROBLEM
50% of the world’s habitable land is used for agriculture; more than three-fourths of that is just for livestock (including land used to grow animal feed). Competition for land use damages ecosystems, putting pressure on biodiversity and threatening 24,000+ species with extinction.
OUR APPROACH
AmplifiedAg builds modular, scalable farms that allow farmers to grow more food with less space. Thanks to our vertical growing methods and year-round harvest schedules, Vertical Roots has been able to grow up to 90% more lettuce than conventional, mono-cropped farms given the same amount of space.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
AmplifiedAg and Vertical Roots are committed to creating and supporting a diverse and inclusive culture and work environment across all roles, levels, and locations. As a growing company that thrives on innovation and collaboration, we believe that our strength comes from the diversity of expertise, perspectives, and experiences, and we are wholly committed to the principles and practices of equity and inclusion for all team members.
